SNOB's SMASH STONES !!!!! - (Match Report August 4th 2001)
SNOB's diminished
squad performed brilliantly, taking full points in both games
against Stones.
It looked like it was going to be a tough weekend with both
captains (Ian Kenworthy & Mick Walker),
and key players missing (Craig Westoby, Chris Galvin, Paul
Connolly, Tom Walton ....). However
the makeshift teams showed true SNOB grit and returned a valuable
20 points.
First Team (Away vs
Stones)
SNOB's batted first, and were inspired by a magnificent opening
century stand by Chris Walker and
Colin Hemingway. However both perished soon after completing
their individual half centuries (Colin
63, Chris 51). Colin Harris then steadied the ship with a typical
gritty performance, batting through for
33 runs. Andy Holding played a captains cameo innings with a
quickfire 43, and despite Chris Fox's
second golden duck in a row, SNOB's cruised to 213 for 7.
Josh Walker opened the bowling excellently with little luck,
having at least three catches dropped.
Meanwhile, Colin Harris was given the other end and bowled 22
overs uphill with the magnificent
return of 6 wickets (should have been 7 !!) for 68. However it
wasn't plain sailing, dropped catches
allowed Stones to move to 170 for 4, before three dismissals in
three balls changed the game, and
despite a nervy last few overs, Stones finally were dismissed for
208 in the last over.
Result SNOB's 10 points, Stones 5 points.
Second Team (Home vs
Stones)
Barry Hodgson stood in as captain, with the main challenge of
trying to field eleven players. SNOB's
batted first, and reached 118 for 9. Martin Stokes and son
produced a memorable partnership, with
Martin going on to a seasons best of 33. Club mascot Stephen then
produced an outstanding 17 not
out to help take the total above 100. Excellent bowling by Andy
Gill (5 wickets for 2 runs!!) and
Barry Hodson (4 wickets for 31 runs) was backed up by magnificent
fielding, including a one handed
diving catch at slip by G-G-G-Granville Lumb (and the ground is
still shaking !!!).
Result SNOB's 10 points, Stones 2 points.
